Welcome to the world of archery. Whether you’ve been inspired by the silver screen or you’re looking to join the local Austin hunting community, starting your journey at Archery Country is the best move you can make. Archery isn't just about pulling a string and letting go; it’s a discipline of repetition, focus, and, most importantly, having a blast at the range.

If you’re a beginner, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the gear and the terminology. Don’t sweat it. We’ve all been there, and our team is here to make sure your first shot is the start of a lifelong obsession. Below are the foundational tips to get you hitting the yellow, along with how you can take your skills to the next level with our pro coaching.

Step 1: The Foundation , Your Stance:

Everything in archery starts from the ground up. If your feet are wrong, your shot is wrong. It’s that simple. At Archery Country, we see a lot of beginners try to face the target like they’re holding a rifle.

The Stance: Sideways is the way.
You want to stand perpendicular to the target. If you’re right-handed, your left shoulder should be pointing toward the target. Your feet should be shoulder-width apart, providing a stable base.

Stability: Keep it neutral.
A common mistake is locking your knees or leaning back. Stand tall, keep your weight centered, and relax your knees just a fraction. Think of yourself as a statue from the waist down. This stability is what allows you to repeat the same motion every single time.

Step 2: The Grip , Less is More:

New shooters often have a "death grip" on the bow. They’re afraid they’re going to drop it, so they squeeze the riser until their knuckles turn white. This is a one-way ticket to "torque," which sends your arrow anywhere but where you’re aiming.

The Grip: The "V" Shape.
You don’t actually "hold" the bow in your palm. Instead, let the grip of the bow rest in the fleshy part of your hand between your thumb and index finger. Your fingers should be relaxed, lightly touching the front of the riser or tucked away.

The Arm: Elbow rotation.
Keep your bow arm elbow rotated out. If your elbow is pointing toward the ground, the bowstring is going to give you a very "warm" welcome to the sport by slapping your forearm. Rotate that elbow out to create clearance and a bone-on-bone support system that doesn't rely on muscle.

Step 3: Finding Your Anchor Point:

Consistency is the name of the game in archery. If you draw the bow to a different spot on your face every time, you’ll never get a consistent group. This is where the "anchor point" comes in.

Consistency: Same spot, every time.
An anchor point is a physical reference on your face where your hand stops every time you draw. For most beginners using a compound bow, this might be the corner of your mouth or the tip of your nose touching the string.

The Feel: Bone-to-bone contact.
Find a spot that feels natural and repeatable. Once you find it, don’t change it. When you work with our coaches like Matt, we help you identify that sweet spot so you aren't guessing every time you pull back.

Step 4: The Release , Don't "Punch" It:

You’ve got the stance, the grip, and the anchor point. Now comes the moment of truth: letting the arrow fly. This is where many beginners get "target panic" and jerk the trigger.

The Motion: Surprising yourself.
Whether you’re using a finger release or a mechanical aid, the release should be a surprise. You want to slowly increase tension until the bow fires. If you "punch" the trigger, you’ll flinch, and the arrow will fly wide.

Follow-Through: Stay in the shot.
Don't drop the bow the second the arrow leaves. Keep your arm up and your eyes on the target until you hear the thwack of the arrow hitting the bale. Imagine you’re watching the arrow all the way into the bullseye.

The Archery Country Pro Shop Experience:

Ready to get your own gear? Here is the most important tip we can give you: Bows are an in-store experience.

You wouldn't buy a pair of custom boots without trying them on, and you shouldn't buy a bow online. Every person has a different draw length, draw weight preference, and "feel" that they like in a bow.

In-Store Only: No online bow sales.
Bows are available in-store only. We do not sell bows on our website because we refuse to sell you a piece of equipment that isn't perfectly fitted to you. When you buy a bow at Archery Country, we set it up, tune it, and make sure you walk out the door ready to shoot accurately and safely.

Gear and Apparel: Available online.
While the bows stay in the shop, you can grab all your Archery Country apparel and gear on our site. From extra arrows to the latest stabilizers, we’ve got the accessories to keep you in the game.
